Many of the proprietary systems owned by brokers used to be vendor systems. Big brokers have gone on a spending spree in recent years, buying up these systems. Among the remaining “independent” software vendors are FutureTrade, Townsend Analytics, Royal Blue, SunGard Trading, and TradePortal.

Vendors such as Lava, FutureTrade, Royal Blue and an up-and-comer, TradePortal, are some of those building out the functionality. Brokers such as Goldman and UNX are not.

TradePortal Releasing Market Maker Platform
6/20/05
By Alexa Jaworski, Markets Reporter

Early next month, TradePortal, a developer of software used to perform direct access trade execution, will be releasing MarketMatrix, an integrated trading platform for market makers.

TradePortal is in the process of beta testing MarketMatriX with Pacific Growth Equities in San Francisco. When the product was introduced to the firm, it made sense they take TradePortal’s Direct Market Access (DMA) approach to their market making segments, where they were using two different products at the same time.

Market makers receive a tremendous benefit from one centralized trading platform offering them a single tool to access the unique benefits of the multiple systems previously on their desks. As a byproduct of the single source, centralized management capabilities that MarketMatrix provides to market makers, firms like Pacific Growth enjoy substantially reduced costs by eliminating the overhead of multiple systems.

According to TradePortal CEO, David Smithey, the next phase for Direct Market Access (DMA) expansion into Japan will likely be its integration into the equities exchanges themselves and might incorporate the use of Electronic Crossover Networks (ECNs). TradePortal is well positioned to support this evolution through its enterprise solution, MatriXsuite. MatriXsuite is an enterprise application that brings the best of DMA technology to all sectors of the securities industry. Later this month, TradePortal will launch its newest product, MarketMatriX, its DMA application customized to the needs of Market Makers.

"Recent years have seen a phenomenal shift in securities trading in Japan, with active traders becoming a driving force behind the retail markets," said Neil Katkov, senior analyst, Celent Japan. "DMA technology for cross-border trading can potentially answer a real need in this and other sectors of the Japanese securities market for access to new products and best execution."

TradePortal, a software developer for the financial services industry specializing in direct market access technology, today announced that it has opened new doors to Asia through the recent development of its DirectEX Application Programming Interface (API), which converts market data into a localized format that can interface with other trading applications.

Adopted by Takada Group, a direct access software company based in Tokyo, Japan, the API enables U.S. stock market access through Takada's front end trading application, Musashi. Musashi is written entirely in Japanese thereby limiting Takada Group's customers the ability to execute trades against the U.S. equities markets.

TradePortal Vision Yields Direct Market Access Trading Platform That Crosses All Market Segments; Software Engineering Centered on One Code Base for Extensible DMA Applications

Not more than ten years ago, first generation direct market access software platforms were developed with the tools of the day; tightly coupled models based on legacy systems. These models were LAN based, which limited traders to equities and required on-site trading, and were developed with the expressed needs of the retail trader in mind. And why not? Retail traders were the main audience for direct access tools and did not require the backend management capabilities, scalability and interoperability inherently required by institutions.

As these first generation tools were being put to task, Irvine, Calif.-based TradePortal was stealthily crafting a software platform that extends direct market access across the board. Determined to develop a platform that brings the value of direct market access technology to all segments of the securities industry, the company's chairman and CEO, David Smithey, enlisted his development team to bridge the technology gap between the retail and institutional sectors.

First in line was TradePortal's flagship product TradeMatriX which services the retail market and was developed to meet the needs of the demanding retail space. TradePortal found that providing software which services this group of sophisticated traders was instrumental to understanding how to develop other functionality, that in the future that would cross over into the institutional space, and offer features that would benefit the institutions.

Industry watcher, Sang Lee, managing partner of Aite Group, commented that, "There is no question that we are in the center of great change in the financial markets which also means it is a time of great opportunity. TradePortal's technology approach which focuses on fueling IT with highly scalable DMA software is poised to become mission critical technology for companies looking to embrace the current trading environment as a launch pad for new business opportunities."

"When we first started, our goal was to form a retail brokerage that would embrace the latest available Direct Market Access (DMA) tools. When we realized how much functionality was lacking and that the existing software could never fuel institutions, we realized what an incredible opportunity there was to develop the next generation of DMA technology," explained David Smithey, Chairman and CEO of TradePortal.
